Downright Filthy

Some people love the smell, but unfortunately, most common dryer sheets contain harmful chemicals that can build up and adhere to clothes. These chemicals coat your machine and your clothes, vent into the air and can rub off onto your skin. EEEK! These sheets can cause serious health problems and this is because the chemicals released mimic estrogen and trigger hormones and asthma! Don’t worry, we have some healthy alternatives…

In one study conducted, researches tested 5 of the top dryer sheets. These researchers found that the sheets emitted more than 15 EDCs. EDC stands for endocrine disrupting compounds and the chemicals in these dryer sheets where linked to hormonal imbalances, skin disorders and asthma. Evidence from other EDC studies shows evidence that EDCs can also affect developing reproductive and nervous systems, metabolism and even cause cancers. The skin is the body’s largest organ and almost instantly absorbs any products into the bloodstream. Now, added fragrances are mostly to blame with dryer sheets and EDCs are also found along in some air fresheners, sunscreens and perfumes. Make sure you’re doing proper research on all topical and cosmetic products you’re using.

Most people think some government agency requires testing or safety checks of these common household laundry and cleaning products but this simply isn’t true. Unfortunately, laundry and cleaning manufactures are not required to preform any safety checks on dryer sheets or other products. Luckily we have options, at home I make an all natural fabric softener for the wash and use wool balls in the dryer instead of traditional dryer sheets.

Trust me, making these safe and natural products is so worth it, below I will include the recipe for fabric softener and explain all about wool dryer balls.

To make fabric softener at home, I simply fill a gallon glass container almost completely to the top with white vinegar, adding in one cup of warm water. Last but not least, add 20-30 drops of you favorite essential oils. I use my laundry as a super simple diffuser for aromatherapy. For example, I use lavender oil with sheets and bedding to help relaxation and sleep.

To finalize your new holistic laundry routine use wool dyer balls in your dryer. Not only will wool balls help to reduce static in your laundry and reduce dry time, but adding essential oils to the balls before drying will leave your clothes with a fresh and amazing scent for weeks. You can easily save your large appliances and your family’s health with these simple changes. Be sure to give you dryer balls a soak in the sink before using them for the first time, the wool has been squished in packaging and needs to be properly fluffed before using. Thoroughly soak your new dryer balls in clean, warm water and let them cycle through the dryer once by themselves, now your dyer balls are ready for essential oils and your laundry!

In short, we have proved there is a simple way to save your families health and your wallet! Start making your laundry work for you!
